By maintaining a regular out-of-class journal, you should show evidence that you can:
- reflect on (respond to, comment on, raise questions about, make personal or other connections to) topics covered in class or in reading assignments;
- make connections between topics covered in class or reading and your own observations of the weather or weather events covered by the media;
- reflect on the ways in which you think that learning strategies used in the class work well for you or that might be improved.
- What: Maintain a class journal. Each entry will consist of your written response to one or more prompting questions and/or statements posted on iLearn.
- When: The assignment starts the first week of the semester and runs through finals week, with entries expected semi-regularly (every one to three weeks). Prompting question(s)/statement(s) will be posted on iLearn no later than the end of each week. Responses (entries) will be due the following week, either before the lecture or before the first lab section meets that week (as indicated in the posted prompt).
- How: Log on to iLearn, select METR 104, click on the link to the current prompt under the "Class Journal Assignment" section, access the prompting question(s)/statement(s), and enter your response. You can enter it by typing directly into iLearn or, perhaps better, by copying and pasting from another application (such as a word processor). You can return to iLearn and edit an already submitted entry as many times as you want before the submission deadline.
- What It's Worth: The class journal is worth 5% of your overall grade. Individual entries earn Credit/Partial Credit/No Credit (2/1/0 points).
- Full credit goes to entries that reflect a good faith effort to address the prompting question(s)/statement(s). A full-credit entry might typically consist of one to several paragraphs and take 5-25 minutes. It needs to be coherent, to the point, reasonably organized, and understandable, but it doesn't have to be a masterpiece of grammar or prose style.
- Partial credit goes to entries that only partly address the prompting question or statement or are only partly coherent or understandable.
- No credit goes to entries that don't address the prompting question or statement, that are not coherent or understandable, or are not submitted before the due date.
- We reserve the right to award up to 5% extra credit toward overall course grade for exceptionally thorough and thoughtful journals.
